If the name Gevenalle doesn’t ring a bell it may be that you remember them as Retroshift. A re-branding nearly two years ago saw the Portland, Oregon, based company founded by Adam Clement back in 2011 move to the Gevenalle name, which is a derivative of two Dutch words translating to “Give All.” The name makes good sense as Gevenalle is dedicated to bringing American-made shifting options to cyclocross, gravel, touring and urban cyclists.

Gevenalle has recently stepped up their game, now offering updated 11-speed GX (Gravel) shifters for use with Shimano MTB derailleurs and drop bar shifters, and new UX (Urban) shifters for those who ride Shimano’s Alfine 8-speed internal hub.

Gevenalle’s new GX, gravel-oriented shifter is a new 1x version, appropriately named the GX1. All GX shifting systems are 10 and 11-speed compatible, with the GX1 designed specifically for those running a single chainring and short-pull brakes, all the GX shifters are compatible with.

Both the GX1 and GX2 work with Shimano Dyna-Sys MTB derailleurs, offering drop bar shifting and braking with MTB gearing. The GX1 now gives riders the option to shave weight while maintaining a wide gear selection for those wanting to run 11-speed Dyna-Sys rear mechanisms and a single ring up front. Both the GX1 and GX2 shifters work exceptionally well for gravel and dirt riding with drop bars. All Gevenalle shifters come with a no questions asked crash/rebuild policy, getting you back on the road for $34.00.

With the popularity of the Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub, Genevalle set out to create a drop bar shifter that would work with the internal rear hub system. Enter the Genevalle UX1. Photo courtesy: Genevalle

Gevenalle’s UX shifters are compatible with Shimano’s Alfine SG-S501 8-speed internal hub. The Alfine hub is loved by commuters for its low maintenance, sealed design and instant shifting ability, and the UX shifter completes the picture for those wanting to use the Alfine hub with drop bars. Based around Gevenalle’s CX platform, UX1 shifters are short pull only, while UX2 change shifters offer both long or short cable pull options. Again, the UX system comes with the aforementioned $34.00 no questions asked crash/rebuild service. Shimano only makes flat bar shifters for the Alfine hub and drop-bar integration gives riders more options to commute with style, comfort and speed.

Since Gevenalle’s innovative CX shifting system came out, the company has received requests from cyclists to adapt the mechanism to other disciplines. We’ve been fans of the Gevenalle shifters for some time and had positive impressions of their rear derailleurs. With the expansion of the GX and UX line-ups, Gevenalle is one step closer to meeting every rider’s demands.
