At just age 18, American bike racing legend Greg LeMond began his bike racing career in Palo Alto, California. He went on to become the first American to win the Tour de France in 1986, again in 1989, and 1990. Lemond is back to his roots this September 17, 2011 to ride in the Echelon Palo Alto Gran Fondo.

Crankbrothers has stepped up to support women’s cyclocross racing at Clif Bar CrossVegas by sponsoring the crankbrothers ladylucx elite women’s race. The ladylucx race will offer prize money to the top 5 women finishers that’s equal to the men.

The course is a 150ish-mile loop around Lincoln that includes “maybe four miles of pavement,” according to Pirate Cycling League member and participant Malcolm Tassi. Everything else is either groomed gravel roads or Minimum Maintenance Roads – forgotten double-track wagon trails that turn into nearly-impassable mud bogs if it rains.

The Knights of the Crusade have been feverishly working to line up race locations and dates that we think will make for the most kick butt season ever. We will be visiting many of our long standing venues this year and at the same time have made some cool changes. The biggest of these changes is that we will be going to Bend for the Halloween Crusade weekend on Oct. 29/30. It seems like there is always a lot going on in the world of professional bike racing and bike racing in general. We are always prepping for a new season or in the midst of another season. There is almost never a break: ’cross season rolls into road season which rolls into mountain bike season which rolls right back into ’cross season. But it’s that time of year again where we are rolling back into ’cross season, which means more and more ’cross pro rumors and rumblings. Seattle, WA — Low Pressure Promotions, LLC announced the details of the 2011 MFG Cyclocross schedule at its world headquarters in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, WA today. MFG Cyclocross is presented by Raleigh Bicycles for 2011 and will consist of six races beginning in September and will conclude on November 13th at the 3rd Annual Woodland Park Gran Prix.
Not only does the USGP come to Sun Prairie in September and nationals to Madison in January, but with 15 events on the schedule, the Wisconsin Cycling Association will be one of the largest series’ in the US.
Philadelphia, PA — Nittany Cross, the first two of 14 races in Mid-Atlantic Cyclocross Series, serves as the closest thing to opening day regional ’crossers have to mark the start of a season that for many goes into the new year. On September 10 and 11, local and international competitors from beginner to elite (professional) categories will descend upon the Valley Preferred Cycling Center’s Trexlertown grounds to participate in the frenzied, furiously fun sport of cyclocross.

The Verge New England Championship Cyclocross Series returns in 2011 with a new focus – to develop and crown the best amateur racers in New England. This year’s Series will crown eight champions – for men, there are Masters 35+, 45+ and 55+, Juniors 10-14 and 15-18 and Amateur (Cat 3). For women, 2011 sees the second year of the Amateur (Cat 3/4) Women’s competition as well as the proud addition of a Masters 35+ contest within the Amateur Women’s race. With the continual growth of the Amateur Women’s field, it became important to add a second category within the race for the fastest category 3 or 4 woman over age 35. Of course, as in years past, there will be races at all events for Category 4 men. Each weekend will also feature at least one UCI-level Elite race that will attract some of the top competitors in the country and the world.

The summer months really are winding away but the high temperatures of August are showing no signs of relenting anytime soon. So, the big news of the week is Tom Vannoppen’s drug bust. But that really shouldn’t cloud other good ’cross news like Nicole Duke joining the Cannondale–Cyclocrossworld.com team. Nys double flats at the London test event and would rather take an Olympic Medal over the ’cross World Championships. Tim Johnson heads to the high country for a week of epicness, how will the former “roadie” handle seven days of mountain bike racing? In this week’s Working Man’s Edition a new working man’s ’cross team comes to Colorado featuring Spencer Powlison, Grant Holicky and Scott Tietzel.
While cycling may get its good name dragged through the dirt on a regular basis, thanks to a near-constant barrage of doping allegations, typically, cyclocrossers tend to stay off of the “accused” list. However, yesterday a Belgian newspaper reported that Tom Vannoppen has been suspended for two years after testing positive for cocaine. Cocaine, in addition to obviously being a banned substance, is considered a “stimulant” under UCI guidelines, so testing positive for the drug is to test positive for doping.
