MFG Hit a home run with Raceway Cross and the Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships. Will Frisco live up to the high expectations?

Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships are officially on for November in San Francisco, and now registration is open as well.

Registration for the most prestigious race of the cyclocross season opens Saturday, September 10th, 2011 at 6:00pm PST

September 9, 2011 – San Francisco, CA – Promising a three-day affair unmatched by previous host cities, event organizers for the 2011 Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships (SSCXWC11) have named Golden Gate Park as the venue for this year’s battle, which is being held from November 18-20, 2011. Previously hosted by Portland and Seattle, 2011 marks the first year the annual race series will be held in San Francisco. Online registration for SSCXWC11 opens on Saturday, September 10th, 2011 at 6:00pm PST and will be available on the event website: http://www.sscxwc2011.com. Racers must participate in qualifiers on Saturday, November 19 in order to secure their place in championship races being held on Sunday, November 20.

Marking another first for the race series, an All-Women’s Cyclocross Singlespeed World Championship race will also be offered on November 20 along with the final event of the day, the All-Men’s Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championship race.

“While I love the boys, it’s about time someone focused on the women,” said Sheila Moon, owner of Sheila Moon Athletic Apparel and title sponsor for SSCXWC11. “I declare that 2011 is the year of the ‘Cyclocross Woman,’ with our very own women’s championship SSCXWC event! Our goal is to have 100 women on the start line—will you be one? And no, men cannot dress up as women and race in it.”

Sheila Moon Athletic Apparel has teamed up with San Francisco race promoter Murphy Mack, responsible for WestCoast Gold Sprints and the multi-terrain SF Enduro, to organize and promote the three-day series of events that culminates in a showdown for one of the most notorious and coveted championship titles in the bike racing arena. Other sponsors already on-board and supporting the 2011 race series include Raleigh Bicycles, Stanley, Shimano, Cyclocross Magazine, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Paragon Machine Works, Bike Monkey, Action Wipes, Retrotec, Cedar Cycling, Roaring Mouse Cycles and Smith Optics.

In addition to championship races, Sunday, November 20, will also encompass a full schedule of traditional, singlespeed only, ’cross category races.

“In recent years, cyclocross has exploded in popularity in North America and increased its fame and credibility in Europe, where it was originally established as a brutal, yet crowd-friendly, sub-genre of bicycle racing,” said Murphy Mack, race promoter. “In a marketplace that traditionally embraces hype, cyclocross is the pinnacle of authenticity and singlespeeders are its heroes. During the weekend of November 18th, top-ranked professionals will race side-by side with amateurs who will do anything to dominate and lay claim to the once-in-a-lifetime title of Singlespeed Cyclocross World Champion. It’s going to be straight up awesome.”
Highlights of the weekend include:

  • Friday, November 18 – East Bay CX ride, showcasing some of the more spectacular dirt riding that Oakland, California has to offer, immediately followed by registration packet pick-up and BBQ with independent bike industry luminaries and DJ Freya at the global headquarters of Sheila Moon Athletic Apparel in nearby Emeryville.
  • Saturday, November 19 – SSCXWC qualifiers. Racers will perform Herculean feats amidst some of the most scenic points in San Francisco, followed by a no-holds barred party organized by Murphy Mack.
  • Sunday, November 20 – The main events, held in Golden Gate Park. A full schedule of singlespeed cyclocross races building up to the focus of the weekend’s events, the All-Women’s Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships and the All-Men’s Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships. The weekend’s events will be capped off with a season-ending party and BBQ where the Golden Single Speed-O will be awarded and the newly tattooed winners’ behinds will be unveiled.

“The Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships are the most prestigious Singlespeed Cyclocross Championships… in the world!   This is going to be an event that will be etched on your brain, and maybe even parts of your body, forever. What could possibly go wrong?” said Mack.

“My motto for the race this year? Skinsuits are optional, but costumes are required,” added Moon.
