The Cannibal could not be contained for long though, and Nys attacked on the stairs and opened a five second gap. By two to go, the gap had extended to 30 seconds over Powers and Trebon. It was clear that Trebon was struggling, and a huge effort from Geoff Kabush saw the Canadian catching him with one to go as they hit the start/finish stretch. “I was going two percent harder than I should have,” Trebon admitted later about his early lead.
In the end, Nys hit the finishing straight solo, hands in the air, with plenty of time to enjoy the roar from the crowd. A less-than-thrilled Powers rolled in for an uncontested second, while Kabush took his first Cross Vegas podium in third and Trebon rolled in for fourth.
“He timed it perfectly. He’s not a bad guy to lose to!” Powers explained, graciously. “I would have liked to have won. For the moment I’m not happy but I’m sure I will be.”
And as for the winner? “It’s dry, it’s difficult … I tried to focus, and I tried to make no mistakes,” Nys told Cyclocross Magazine.
