LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY – Sue Butler took an early lead in the Masters 40-44 race, pushing hard through the thick mud and holding off a chase by Kristin Weber and Linda Sone, who took second and third, respectively. Despite her recent (“Five months and three weeks ago, exactly”) back surgery, the elite racer-turned-master dropped the hammer at the gun and never looked back as she powered through the mud.
“My back and butt hurt!” she laughingly told Cyclocross Magazine. She also took the National Championship Women’s 40-44 title, so while the racer would still rather be racing against the likes of Katie Compton, she’s happy with how her season ended up, all things considered. Behind her, Boulder Cycle Sport’s Weber worked hard to drop Sone, and succeeded handily, coming in a half minute before the Minneapolis firefighter.
