At Cyclocross Magazine, we love throwing contests, especially when the winner is the kind of racer who is stoked to use the prize to up their cyclocross game.

Yesterday, Southern California racer Jason Quan won the KHS CX300 Cyclocross Bike Giveaway Contest, landing him a CX300, complete with Shimano R685 hydraulic STI 11-speed levers and RS785 hydraulic disc brakes. We caught up with him, and he couldn’t have been more excited, giving the oft reply “I’ve never won anything in my life.”

This was his first season racing cyclocross, although he’s wanted to try it for longer. He spent the year racing in the SoCal Series, and can be seen weekend after weekend in the shots by one of our race contributors and famed SoCal cyclocross photographer, Phil Beckman at PBCreative.com.

Quan spent the year on a steel Civilian cyclocross bike, setting it up tubeless with a 1×10 system. While he wanted a bomb-proof setup, he told us that he found that he was in dire need of a lighter weight bike for the stiff competition at the races. The Thanksgiving Turkey Weekend, in particular, with all of its obstacles, gave his upper body a brutal workout.

This year, he spent most of the summer preparing for Levi’s Gran Fondo, but after this fall, the cyclocross bug bit him and he wants to double down on his training for next year. He began racing mountain biking and switched to road, and he called cyclocross the best of both worlds.

Congrats to Jason Quan, and here’s to a great cyclocross season next year!
