After years of development, and teases at Interbike, Speedplay is set to ship their Syzr Mountain Bike Pedals. At Interbike 2014, we saw the pedal that was expected to be released at the end of last year. We followed up with Speedplay at NAHBS to examine the ready-to-be-shipped pedals.

The Syzr cleats have a pivot mechanism designed into them, and users can adjust the float from zero to ten degrees. We asked them about their performance in muddy conditions, and we were told that the pedals have gone through extensive testing with mud and rocks without any issues, both with respect to the pedal's release function and the float system in the cleats. It remained uncertain whether or not conditions in ice were also extensively tested.

Speedplay pointed to the ceramic roller-cams in the pedals when they explained why the pedal maintains performance in wet and muddy conditions. The roll of the non-metal cams do not seize in wet conditions. But the pedals themselves are not the only item that is adjustable. The spring tension on the pedals themselves are also adjustable by a torx bolt.

Syzr pedals have a removable Phillips screw on the axle, offering access to inject grease into the needle and cartridge bearings. A rider can also get different spindle lengths if necessary.

The cleat weighs an additional 68g per pair on top of the weight of the pedals, which come in two versions. The stainless steel model will retail for $229, weighing in at 320g per pair, while the titanium model retails for $420, and is listed on the Speedplay website as having a claimed weight of 274g per pair.
