Mat Stephens got aero to drop Jake Wells and Menso de Jong to take the 2017 Dirty Kanza 200 gravel race.
Stephens, from Dallas, Texas, rides for the Panaracer gravel team. He broke away with Wells and De Jong to distance the rest of the field, including defending champ Ted King.
Using the 3T Exploro “aero gravel” bike and clip-on aero bars, Stephens finished in 10:49:08, beating former cyclocross pro Jake Wells by 1:43, and narrowly missing the 2014 course record by a mere 5 minutes.
