Josh Berry got his start in cyclocross, including a trip to race in Europe as a U23 athlete, so it is not surprising he chose a cyclocross bike for the Dirty Kanza 200 in June. Berry felt at home on his Giant TCX, finishing second behind fellow retired road racer Ted King at the granddaddy of U.S. gravel races. (It was not the first time we have seen the TCX called into gravel duty.)

Berry was back in action on the gravel roads of Nebraska at the 2018 Gravel Worlds. However, he had a new bike for the 150-mile race.

Like Amanda Nauman, Michael van den Ham and others, Berry has embraced his new gravel career with a new gravel bike. At Gravel Worlds, Berry was riding the new Giant Revolt Advanced 0 that was, quite literally, hot off the presses.

“We actually just released it I think two days ago,” Berry said about his Gravel Worlds bike. “It’s called the Revolt Advanced. This is a preliminary version of that. I’ve had it for a little bit. I rode the TCX at Dirty Kanza, and this is a gravel-specific bike.”

We checked out Berry’s new gravel bike after his third-place finish at Gravel Worlds, and today, we profile the new gravel bike from Giant.

Josh Berry’s Gravel Worlds Giant Revolt Advanced 0 Gravel Bike

The Giant Revolt Advanced comes in three builds, each of which has a carbon frame and fork. Berry rode the Revolt Advanced 0, which comes with a Shimano Ultegra build and Giant carbon rims. The company claims clearance for tires up to 45mm wide, and both the frame and fork have rack and fender mounts.

The Revolt Advanced takes the slack geo approach to gravel, with a head tube angle of 70.5 degrees and a wheelbase of 103.6cm on a Medium frame with a 55cm top tube. The downward-sloping top tube and low seat stays create small triangles that Berry said help with the long-distance comfort.

“It’s way more relaxed than a TCX,” Berry said about the Revolt Advanced. “I can get pretty aero on it and get comfortable. It just wants to go straight, and it wants to go fast. Whereas the TCX wants to go fast around a corner as quickly as it can, this stays on the ground and goes fast.”

A couple things were noticeable about Berry’s bike. His Ultegra drivetrain included the new clutch-based Ultegra RX800 rear derailleur. We saw Sven Nys run the Di2 Ultegra RX805 on his Trek Checkpoint at Dirty Kanza, but the new clutch derailleur for double systems also comes stock on the Revolt Advanced 0.

(Mechanical shifting was seemingly in for the top Gravel Worlds riders running Shimano drivetrains, with both Colin Strickland and Amity Gregg both running mechanical systems as well. Most of the Shimano bikes we profiled at Dirty Kanza had electronic systems.)

Berry commented on the Ultegra RX derailleur, “The Ultegra RX is going to stock on it. I forgot to turn on the clutch one day, and was like ‘What’s wrong with my bike?’ And then turned it on and was like, ‘Ah, this is amazing.’ I really like it. I’m putting it on my road bike because Tucson roads are so bad.”

Berry’s gearing included an Ultegra crankset with compact 50/34t chain rings and an Ultegra 11-32t rear cassette.

The Revolt Advanced 0 comes with Giant’s CXR-1 Carbon WheelSystem rims and hubs. The tubeless clinchers have an internal width of 23mm, making them gravel-tire-ready. Berry ran 700c x 38mm Schwalbe G-One tires for the fast-rolling gravel of the Gravel Worlds course.

Brakes on the Revolt Advanced 0 are modern flat mount disc paired with Ultegra ST-R8000 shift/brake levers. Berry crossed brands for his saddle with a Specialized Romin Evo, and like Alison Tetrick, he used Speedplay Zero Pavé minimalist pedals.

A Garmin Edge 520 helped him guide his way along the Nebraska gravel roads. Berry’s podium quest was aided when the two riders in front of him missed the turn out of the last roundabout to the finish located in the parking lot of the SchillingBridge brewery. The directions on his Garmin after the race show the path he took home to grab the third podium spot.
