Gage Hecht (Alpha Bicycle – Vista Subaru) now has two monster rides in two weekends to his name after he took second at Saturday’s Derby City Cup. Last Sunday in Cincinnati, Hecht went wheel-to-wheel with Stephen Hyde (Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) into the last lap, and on Saturday he appeared poised to do so again before a flat tire dropped him off the National Champion’s pace.

Hecht’s success is no surprise to fans who have been following his career arc thus far. Hecht finished fourth in the Junior Men’s race at the 2015 Worlds in Tabor and won at Koksijde earlier that season.

This season Hecht has been on fine form. He raced a long road season with Aevolo, which was highlighted by a second-place finish in the Men’s U23 race at U.S. Road Nationals. Hecht has also shown maturity beyond his years when talking about what he has learned about racing during his career.

And post racing, he may find himself doing a different kind of flying in the cockpit.

Cyclocross Magazine caught up with Hecht ahead of his weekend in Louisville. The young star talked about his memorable race against Hyde and more in this pre-weekend interview.
