VERONA, WISCONSIN—The sun was still shining by 10:30 but it felt as if temperatures had started to drop as the breeze picked up for the start of the women’s 55-59 and 60+ Masters races. Kathy Sarvary (Blue Steel Cyclery) took the holeshot in the seven-deep 55-59 women’s field. Within one lap, Savary had developed a gap of 15 seconds on the field, followed by Diane Ostenso (Trek Midwest Team).

With two to go, Ostenso was 22 seconds back from Sarvary, and Elizabeth Heller (708 Racing) was just under a minute back from the leader, with a seemingly insurmountable gap on the rest of the field.

Sarvary maintained her lead, despite a crash and ensuing chain suck, and Ostenso and Heller followed  well behind her through the finish to round out the podium.

In the 60-64 field, Tove Shere (KHSNM.com/Thenationalsproject.com) took the win, powering away from Durango rider Martha Iverson (Durango Wheel Club) for her second national championship. Shere last won back in 2005 in Providence, in the deep snow. Shere said “this course has something for everybody: mud, climbs, descents. I got away on the power sections, so it was a good course for me.” Shere will skip Masters Worlds in Louisville to return to her full-time job as a coach and P.E. teacher. “I can’t take two weeks off…after just having two weeks off!” she said, referring to the winter break just finished. “I’m hoping to go to Louisville in 2013.” 65+ had one rider, Julie O’Niell, who took the win, and in the 70+ field, Julie Lockhart (NEBC) was the winner, adding another jersey to her almost 20 national championship victories (across all disciplines). “This one was easy,” Lockhart said, referring to the course in Madison. “I did the New Year’s races in Chicago and they were harder.”
