Junior Men racers do not get very many opportunities to race against one another, so the young ’crossers want to make the most of every opportunity.

2018 U.S. Junior 15-16 national champion Magnus Sheffield (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld) had a disappointing afternoon on Saturday, so he wanted to make the most of Sunday’s race. The fact that the race was for the Continental Champion’s jersey gave the race more import.

Two laps into Sunday’s Junior 17-18 Pan-Ams race, three of the favorites were at the front: Sheffield, Alex Morton (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld) and Saturday’s winner Nick Carter (KCCX Elite Cyclocross). Two laps later, they were joined by Carter Woods (Naked Factory Racing) and Ryan Maclean (Juventus CC).

A win would not come easy for any of the riders.

The last few hundred meters of the course featured a series of turns in the sand, a straight stretch along Pit 2 and the final turn onto the start/finish straight. With a group of five, being first or second wheel was almost a necessity.

Sheffield led into the sand and then was the first onto the finishing straight. He sprinted the long section to take home the win and the Pan-Ams jersey. Carter finished second and Woods third.
