The last stop before the 2019 World Championships in Bogense, Denmark takes place on Sunday at World Cup Hoogerheide.

With the race one week before Worlds, a good part of the Worlds teams from the U.S. and Canada will be making the trip to the western part of the Netherlands for the annual World Cup finale. Across all categories, 30 Americans and 12 Canadians are set to race.

We take a look at the start lists for Hoogerheide and the state of the Elite World Cup overall standings heading into the last of the nine World Cups that started back in September in Waterloo.

Elite Women’s Race

Last week in Pont-Château, Marianne Vos (CCC – Liv Cycling) locked up the first World Cup overall of her career thanks in part to the absence of Sanne Cant (IKO – Beobank). Vos also did her part to lock up the series by winning the fast, tactical race.

Kaitie Keough (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld) currently sits in fourth in the World Cup overall, trailing Cant by 24 points. Annemarie Worst (Steylaerts – 777) moved up into second at Pont-Château.

The North American contingent is a big one.

Keough, Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek Knight), Ellen Noble (Trek Factory Racing CX), Maghalie Rochette (CX Fever p/b Specialized), Clara Honsinger (Team S&M CX), Sammi Runnels (Squid Squad), Rebecca Fahringer (Kona Maxxis Shimano), Elle Anderson (Milwaukee – Alpha Motorhomes), Ruby West (Specialized -Tenspeed Hero), Courtenay McFadden (Pivot Cycles/Maxxis p/b Stan’s/DNA Cycling), Katie Clouse (Alpha Bicycle – Groove Subaru), Madigan Munro (Boulder Junior Cycling), Magdeleine Vallieres Mill (Quebecor / Stingray), Dana Gilligan (Next Wave), Sidney McGill (Focus CX Canada) and Kelly Lawson (Hardwood Next Wave Cycling Team) are all set to start.

Elite Men’s Race

The race to watch in the Elite Men’s race is the one between Wout van Aert (Cibel – Cebon Offroad Team) and Toon Aerts (Telenet Fidea Lions). Van Aert took over the World Cup overall lead by three points with his win at World Cup Pont-Château. At stake is the €10,000 difference between first and second in the World Cup overall.

There is also something else at stake.

The rider who will be watching the race closer than anyone is Tim Merlier (Roompot – Charles)—well, he will be racing, but you know what we mean. If Aerts wins the World Cup overall, Belgium gets another starting spot for Worlds and Merlier gets to race in Denmark. If Van Aert wins the overall, Merlier has to stay home since the team already got an extra spot for Van Aert’s rainbow stripes.
