Submissions to the MABRAcross logo contest continue to roll in, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to send in your design. May 14th is the deadline for you procrastinators to enter. To get those creative juices flowing, or for those of you scoring at home, here are some samples of the quality work MABRAcross has already received. This contest has been an interesting study in what sticks out most to people about the sport of cyclocross. The ubiquitous barrier seems to capture the most attention. Mark Trostle’s submission is a good example of barrier/logo integration. Jeff Trinh’s entry successfully follows the same theme but from a low-profile angle. A couple more entries also take on the barriers meme. If you’re still thinking about what your entry will look like, tackling a different element of the sport may be worthwhile.

Concentrating more on the MABRAcross name, Jess Hall submitted several different looks. This is a great direction to go. Look at the letters, play with some killer fonts and think about what your logo might look like on a jersey.

There have been a couple submissions that have definitely gone “outside the box.” Two that stick out come from Cyclocross Magazine contributor Jim Ventosa, who took the “cyclocross is the punk rock of bike racing” idea and ran with it. In his first entry, he combines Mid-Atlantic hardcore royalty, the Bad Brains, with Mid-Atlantic cyclocross. Kapow.

Jim also dropped a death metal-themed design into the hat. This entry, produced with Tinkerbell pencil and submitted via iPhone, illustrates an important point about the contest. You do not have to be a professional graphic designer working with the latest software tools to compete. That is not to say we don’t want those submissions, as we’ve received great work from the pros. But if you are just an average joe with a killer idea, pick up that cocktail napkin, turn over your TPS report, scribble in the margins of the court summons, it doesn’t matter, they all work. Scan it, take a picture, reproduce it in ASCII art, whatever it takes, just send it in.

We want to see everything, but you have to act soon. The contest ends this Friday, May 14. Prizes include a three-race MABRAcross pass, gear from Team TOMS Shoes and CXHairs.com swag. Send submissions to [email protected].
