Stop three of the 2019 Epic Rides Off-Road Series was in Carson City, Nevada over the weekend. At the last stop in Grand Junction, the weekend belonged to Katerina Nash (Clif Pro Team), who won both the Fat Tire Crit and the Backcountry race.
The 50-mile Pro race took place west of Carson City, using the Ash Canyon trails and the Marlette Flume Trail that overlooks Lake Tahoe to provide some beautiful views along with the tough challenge.
The weekend’s racing started with the Fat Tire Crit in Carson City on Friday and then wrapped up on Sunday with the Backcountry mountain bike race. As always, the weekend’s racing featured a number of cyclocrossers and graveleurs.
Fat Tire Crit
Nash was back in the Czech Republic celebrating her grandmother’s 90th birthday, but her teammate Haley Batten (Clif Pro Team) carried the team torch on Friday by winning the Fat Tire Crit. Chloe Woodruff (Stan’s Pivot Pro Team) took second and Kate Courtney (Scott-SRAM MTB Racing) third.
Catharine Pendrel (Clif Pro Team) finished 5th, Crystal Anthony (Liv Cycling) 6th, Hannah Finchamp (Clif Pro Team) 7th, Kaysee Armstrong (Liv Cycling) 8th, Kaitie Keough (Cannondale) 10th, Sofia Gomez Villafane (Stan’s Pivot Pro Team) 12th, Sammi Runnels (Squid) 15th, Ellen Noble (Trek Factory Racing) 18th, Caitlin Bernstein (Velocio) 20th and Jen Malik (KS Kenda Women’s Elite Team) 22nd.
Keegan Swenson (Stan’s Pivot Pro Team) took the Men’s Fat Tire Crit win. Bryan Lewis (Cutaway, USA) finished second and fresh off the Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder, Tristan Uhl (Giant Factory Off-Road Team) took third.
Payson McElveen (Orange Seal Off-Road Team) finished 5th, Henry Nadell (CZ Racing) 12th, Stephan Davoust (Giant Factory Off-Road Team) 13th, Carl Decker (Giant Factory Off-Road Team) 15th, Zach Calton (Summit National Team) 16th, Josh Berry (Giant Factory Off-Road Team) 22nd and Troy Wells (Santa Cruz, Capo, Stan’s) 25th.

Backcountry Race
The Women’s Backcountry race went down to the wire, with Rose Grant (Stan’s Pivot Pro Team) edging out teammate Woodruff. Courtney rounded out the podium in third.
Pendrel finished 4th, Gomez Villafane 7th, Anthony 8th, Finchamp 9th, Keough 10th, Noble 13th, Armstrong 14th, Bernstein 17th, Runnels 22nd and Malik 26th.
In the Men’s race, Swenson made it a sweep by taking the Backcountry win. Russell Finsterwald (Clif Pro Team) finished second and Benjamin Sonntag (Clif Pro Team) third.
Davoust finished 12th, McElveen 16th, Berry 19th, Decker 21st, Calton 22nd, Nadell 23rd, Uhl 27th and Wells 30th.
