ASHEVILLE, North Carolina—In a reversal from last year's second place finish, Jacob Lasley (SPCX p/b R. K. Black) took the win in the Men's 35-39 Championship race at the Biltmore Estate earlier this morning ahead of Matt Shriver (Trek Cyclocross Collective).

At the race's start, 48 starter staged eight rows deep riders and stripped their outwear off and faced the daunting course and the 26 degree morning temperature.

Off the line it was Tom Burke (Giant Bicycle p/b CHG Inc. & Zingerman's) with the holeshot. But by the half way point of the first lap, Lasley was in control of the already very strung out field. Shriver chased hard and the two leading riders were putting together nearly identical lap times until Shriver's bike change on lap three.

Shriver only told us on the finish that he had "bike problems" but would not elaborate on the issues that saw Lasley stretch his gap and cost Shriver a real shot at repeating as the National Champion.

Lasley rode his race to perfection up ahead while Shriver distanced third place rider Burke.

Sean Estes (Cycle Sport - Specialized p/b Muscle Milk) rode well and slotted into the fourth spot on the course despite a poor call-up position.

The race within the race was for the podium's final, fifth position. After battling all race with barely a tire width between them, it came down to a sprint between Nathaniel Ward (Cycletherapy) and Weston Schempf (SEAVS/Haymarket), with Ward claiming the fifth and final spot in a sprint to the line.
