We've said it before that dropper posts are not for everyone. But for some, a dropper can be a great addition to a gravel or even a cyclocross bike. Easily getting the saddle out for the way for technical descents is a clear advantage when it comes to getting rider weight properly distributed for the steepest, most technical downhills. (If you missed our Training Tuesday piece on tackling descents, check it out here.)

We've taken a recent look at a new wireless offering from Magura and now we're looking at a more traditional, and less expensive, cable-activated dropper post from PNW Components.

The PNW Components Rainier 27.2 dropper post is designed for cross country, cyclocross and gravel riders and racers. The Rainier is intended to be convenient and lightweight and is meant to be a quick fix for technical or steep descents. And it offers infinite height adjustment within its 80mm of travel.

The post has a claimed weight, with lever and uncut cables, of 583 grams in its 330mm length. On the Cyclocross Magazine scale the post came in a bit heavier at 592 grams.

The Rainier's lever can be mounted on the right or left side of your bar with clamps for drop bars and MTB bars. And the unit's head uses a keyed system where the inner portion of the lower post has machined slots and the stanchion has brass keys that fit those slots. The result is said to allow the post to move vertically freely, but prevents spinning.

It's no secret that we much prefer two-bolt post head designs for holding saddles firmly in place. So we're anxious to get the PNW Components' Rainier set up on a bike and give it a go. Stay tuned for ride impressions and a full review.
