ASHEVILLE, North Carolina—In a show of force that let him live his dream, David Thompson (CT Cycling Advancement Program) took the Cyclocross National Championship title in the Junior Men’s 9-10 race.

“I always wanted this victory. I’ve been training for a couple of weeks. I knew I could get it and I just went as hard as I could,” Thompson said after the event.

As the young men tore off the start grid it was Henry Rapinz (Boulder Junior Cycling) who took the group onto the field of battle.

“I thought [Rapinz] would stay on my wheel,” Thompson said when asked if he thought he’d have the ride off the front that he did. It was the first pass of the run up on the two lap race that Thompson took the lead and from there he extended his advantage over Rapinz and the rest of the field.

Thompson charged the course for the second and final lap and more than one spectator noted how cleanly he was riding sections that gave masters racers trouble earlier in the week.

With the victory out of sight, Rapinz had to settle for second, 59 seconds back, followed by Ryan Drummond (OKCVC Bike Lap) in third, Chase Usma (US Military Academy) in fourth and Caleb Nevins rounding out the five-deep podium.

This was Thompson’s second trip to the podium at Cyclocross Nationals having finished third last year. Hear how he took the win from the newly crowned champion himself and see the full results, below.
