While many cyclocross stars resumed their season at the 2020 Ethias Cross Rappencross de Lokeren on Saturday, some were in Italy this weekend to race for road rainbow jerseys.

It was worth the trip.

Two cyclocross world championship medalists went 1-2 in the men’s road race at the 2020 UCI Road World Championships in Imola, Italy.

2010 Cyclocross Worlds silver medalist Julian Alaphilippe (France) attacked the final climb to drop a select group of leaders, including Wout van Aert (Belgium).

Alaphilippe kept the chasers at bay to take a dramatic world championship victory and upgrade his 2010 Worlds medal from silver to a 2020 road gold.

Van Aert easily took the sprint out of five chasers to win silver.

Swiss Marc Hirschi took bronze.

The silver medal was Van Aert’s second of the Imola Worlds, after taking silver in the time trial on Friday.

On Saturday, in the women’s road race, living legend and seven-time cyclocross world champ Marianne Vos took fourth, winning the chase group sprint. Her compatriot Anna van der Breggen took the win, her second win of the event.
