In a fast, relatively dry race, the Elite Women put on a thrilling show with pack racing and bunnyhopping.
Puck Pieterse hopped the barriers to a big lead with two and a half laps left, putting everyone on the defensive, but one lap later, the race was back together.
Seven women hit the final lap with a chance at victory.
Lucinda Brand put in a dig entering the grass, with Denise Betsema chasing and Pieterse in tow. Behind, Annemarie Worst and Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado did their best to stay connected to the three.
Pieterse passed Betsema before the barriers, but Brand, for the first time all race, nullified Pieterse’s barrier advantage. She was first over the barriers, and after a quick remount, put in a decisive attack that kept Pieterse and the rest chasing.
Brand kept her lead until the finish, with Pieterse outsprinting Worst and Alvarado for the podium.
Maghalie Rochette finished 10th, with Clara Honsinger in 11th.
