Stop 8 of the 2019/20 Telenet UCI World Cup takes place on Sunday in Nommay Pays de Montbeliard.

Need some help pronouncing it? Steve Chainel, Steve and Caroline Mani are here to help.

This will be Nommay’s ninth time hosting a World Cup since the turn of the new millennium. It was last held in 2018, where Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek Knight) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Fenix) took the wins.

The race is known for its stairs right after the holeshot that are memorable enough Geoff Proctor incorporates them into holeshot drills at MontanaCrossCamp.

The Elite races will be rainbow-less, with both Sanne Cant (IKO – Crelan) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Fenix) taking the race off. That could, as Rebecca Fahrhinger points out, be due to logistics.

Elite Women

Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado (Alpecin – Fenix) enters the Nommay World Cup perfect in 2020 and the overall series leader by 1 point over Katerina Nash (Clif Pro Team) and her new Specialized CruX bike. Annemarie Worst (777) is in 3rd, 15 points behind Alvarado.

Heading up the North American contingent are National Champs Maghalie Rochette (Specialized x Feedback Sports) and Clara Honsinger (Team S&M CX). Other North American starters include Katie Compton (KFC Racing p/b Trek Knight), Rebecca Fahringer (Kona Maxxis Shimano), Katie Clouse (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld), Sammi Runnels (Squid x Eliel), Hannah Arensman (JA King Cyclocross), Rebecca Gross (Zero D Racing), Emily Werner (Amy D. Foundation), Ruby West (Pivot / Maxxis p/b Stan’s NoTubes) and Claire Steciuk (Hardwood Next Wave).

The Elite Women’s race takes place on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. EST. It will be broadcast in the U.S. via the NBC Gold app and in Canada on FloBikes.

Full start lists are below.

Elite Men

Last year’s World Cup overall winner Toon Aerts (Telenet Baloise Lions) leads the current World Cup overall despite having zero World Cup race wins thus far. He holds a 45-point lead over Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen -Bingoal) and a 51-point cushion over Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) thanks in large part to Iserbyt’s hypothermic DNF at Namur.

After Van der Poel, riders 2 through 17 in the current UCI standings are scheduled to race at Nommay. Number 18 is Wout van Aert (Jumbo – Visma), who is scheduled to race in Zonnebeke and Hoogerheide next weekend.

The four U.S. riders are Curtis White (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld), Kerry Werner (Kona Maxxis Shimano), Stephen Hyde (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld) and Patrick Collins (KB Photo CX / A-D Bikes).

The Elite Men’s race takes place on Sunday at 9 a.m. EST. It will be broadcast in the U.S. via the NBC Gold app and in Canada on FloBikes.

Full start lists are below.

U23 / Junior Men

Five North Americans are starting in the U23 Men’s race. They include Gage Hecht (Donnelly / Aevolo), Eric Brunner (Blue – Stages Racing), Lane Maher (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld Devo), Alex Morton (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld Devo) and Malcolm Barton (Durham Shredders).

Four North Americans are set to start in the Junior Men’s race. Riders include Andrew Strohmeyer (CX Hairs Devo / Trek Bikes), Nick Carter (KCCX), Magnus Sheffield (Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld Devo) and Cody Scott (Giant Canada).
