The first UCI Cyclocross World Cup at Beekse Bergen featured four favorites and a fifth-row starting dark horse.

While World Cup leader Eli Iserbyt (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) missed a pedal at the start and once again, just as he did on Friday in Niel, had to make his way from way back in the field, other pre-race favorites Lars van der Haar (Baloise Trek Lions), Laurens Sweeck (Crelan Fristads) and Michael Vanthourenhout (Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal) wasted no time in hitting the front and staying out of trouble on the sandy, fast course.

Starting from a fifth row, former U23 World Champ Joris Nieuwenhuis (Baloise Trek Lions) shot off the line and halfway through the race, made it a race of four leaders. Beekse Bergen hosted the Dutch national championships before. Could that prove to be an advantage for the Dutch over the Belgians?

Iserbyt showed remarkable determination, reconnecting with the leaders with two laps to go, but the effort proved to be a bit much, as he made small but costly mistakes that kept him from hitting the front.

With one lap to go, Vanthourenhout hit the front, but could never quite gap the chasers, and despite hitting the finishing pavement first, Sweeck unleashed a powerful sprint to take his second World Cup of the season. Van der Haar finished in second, Vanthourenhout in third, with Nieuwenhuis in fourth and Iserbyt in fifth.
