’Crossers continue to give us something to report on at the US Mountain Bike National Championships in Granby, CO. Katie Compton, who took fifth in Saturday’s XC race behind Mary McConneloug and winner Georgia Gould, left everyone behind to power into her second short track national title. Gould finished a fantastic weekend by finishing second, and it was a fourth place finish for McConneloug. Amy Dombroski (Luna Pro Team), a relative newcomer to mountain biking, was 10th.
For the men, Todd Wells wasn’t satisfied going home with just one win; he claimed another title in the short track. Adam Craig (Rabo-Giant) was third, with his rally car racing mate Carl Decker (Giant) in fourth. Ryan Trebon dropped a few spots from his third place XC finish to take sixth. Todd’s brother Troy Wells (Clif Bar) was in ninth. Skyler Trujillo, the new XC Junior Champion, made a stab at the short track title as well but will be happy with a second place finish, behind Howard Grotts (Durango Devo). Zane Godby (Clif Bar) finished eighth.
A very special nod goes out to biking legend and all around baddass Ned Overend, who still races occasional Elite Cyclocross, has won Masters ’Cross Nats, mixes it up with the pros on the road, and was the first ever MTB World Champion in the inaugural event in Colorado in 1990. The 54 year-old won the singlespeed XC race on Saturday. Somehow it just doesn’t seem like his cup of tea, but we’d love to see him let loose this October for the Singlespeed Cyclocross Worlds in Seattle![Gallery not found]
