Avoiding Injury - Getting Ready for Mounts and Dismounts
July 23rd, 2008 Filed Under Issue 1, print_archives, training
It’s nearing that time of year when ‘cross racers are dusting off their ‘cross bikes and doing a few drills. Don’t start off the season on the wrong foot with an injury caused by repetitive drills of motions you’re not used to like remounts. Contributing author David Perez has got some easy stretches to make sure you don’t suffer any setbacks before the racing has even begun. (This article was originally published in our premier Issue 1.)
The start of the cyclocross season always brings renewed energy to any rider. Many of you have already been racing the road or mountain bike circuits while others are coming off of other sports such as triathlons. Jumping back onto the `cross bike brings into play a whole new set of mechanics that we must once again master. Mounts, dismounts, barriers and adverse weather conditions are common components of cyclocross and can lead to some very unique cycling injuries. In these articles, I will provide you with treatments and preventative measures for injuries typically seen in this sport. For some of you this material will build on existing knowledge from previous injuries. For the rest of you, if you implement some of the suggestions outlined here, it may be the difference between a pain-free season and one ruined by dealing with difficult injuries.
So, in this christening article we will address one of the more common (and painfully obvious) choices …continue reading: Avoiding Injury - Getting Ready for Mounts and Dismounts

New Product Spotlight: 2009 Bianchi D2 Cross Concept Race
July 19th, 2008 Filed Under cyclocross news, cyclocross technology
Cyclocross Magazine is honored to be the very first online or print publication to get an early look at the full-carbon 2009 Bianchi D2 Cross Concept Race. Like Lapierre, Bianchi is eschewing scandium for carbon this year for its top dog ‘cross bike, the D2 Cross Concept. The bike is spec’d with Ultegra shifters, a Dura-Ace rear derailleur, an FSA SLK carbon crank, Mavic Askium Race wheels, Avid cantilevers, Deda Elementi cockpit, and Vittoria XG Pro tires. Our pre-production bike’s specs are expected to be very similar if not the same as the production models. As equipped, our bike weighs a very light 18 pounds without pedals. Racers with lightweight race wheels could easily shed another pound. MSRP has not been set yet.
Fans of older Cross Concepts will appreciate the fact that Bianchi appears to have kept the same geometry as their Scandium model, with a relatively low bottom bracket (6.8 cm drop), moderate top tube (55 cm on a 55 cm model), and shorter wheelbase (101.5 cm). Initial rides have indicated an agile, race-ready bike. Stay tuned for more on the carbon D2 Cross Concept Race in Issue 4 of Cyclocross Magazine.

Issue 3 Arriving and a Note About Google Checkout
July 18th, 2008 Filed Under print mag
Issue 3 has been arriving on the west coast this week and it’s been traveling the country faster than our last issue thanks to upgraded shipping. We expect most metro areas to receive the magazine by end of next week.
Also, for our subscribers who subscribed online via Google Checkout - you may have received another email from Google Checkout last night that looks remarkably similar to a new order receipt. You needn’t worry - you’re not being double charged. Our fulfillment department is just catching up and marking all past subscriptions as shipped to satisfy the Google Checkout pestering police, and that email just reflects that change in status. We’re sorry for any confusion.

A Date With Sven Nys
July 16th, 2008 Filed Under cyclocross news, racers
Sven Nys, the most dominant ‘cross racer of his generation, is having a go at the mountain bike event at the Beijing Olympics next month. As part of his preparation and focus, he’s refusing all interviews before the Olympics. That means refusing all interviews from any publication, with the one exception of Cyclocross Magazine, of course. Through our Belgian correspondent and contributor Christine Vardaros, we’ve got a date with the ‘cross star. And just like at any World Cup, Nys wants to one-up Bart Wellens (interviewed in our Issue 2) and be the best interview we’ve had ever. Now is your chance to make that happen and steer our date with the star. No, you don’t get to tell Christine what to to wear (Nys is married) but you can tell us what you’d like to find out.
Jump on over to our beta forums, and post your suggested questions. We can’t guarantee we’ll get to all of them, but we can guarantee with all of your input, the interview will be better than us just asking what we want to know. You’ve only got a few days to get your questions in though, so do it now!
