Last year in late June, we first reviewed the Smith Optics Overtake aero helmet after extensive rides. The company had informed us then that they were preparing to release the MIPS version at a slightly higher price, and they showed us the model firsthand at Press Camp 2015.

Smith Optics has quickly become an easily-identifiable brand due to the Koroyd "honeycomb" interior liner of the helmet provided both on their Overtake and mountain bike-oriented Forefront helmets. While the company still uses an EPS liner, the Koroyd replaces part of the bulk of the EPS foam, which Smith Optics says doesn't absorb as much energy as their nontraditional approach.

We have looked at MIPS technology for years, which is designed to prevent multi-directional impacts. As reported earlier, the helmet equipped with the liner is more expensive, with the technology bringing the $250 baseline price of the Smith Optics Overtake to $310.
