At HPCX in New Jersey, Cassie Maximenko (Van Dessel/Ism/Powerbar/Challenge) took a fierce uphill holeshot, although it wasn’t long lived as Cross Crusade legend Laura Winberry (unattached) took over for part of the first lap. The women at the front traded places for the early goings, and BrittLee Bowman (House Ind/Withings/Simplehuman) took the lead before a technical tight off-camber area.

Bowman’s wheels slid out from underneath her and Kathryn Cumming (Cyclocross Magazine Racing) and Maximenko charged forward to keep the pace high. Cumming was in the lead for a lap until Maximenko passed her on the climbs. Cumming used the two run-ups to stay on Maximenko’s wheel, and the two were able to fend off the rest of the field for the rest of the race.

Maximenko charged up the pavement for the final time, two seconds ahead of Cumming. Kathleen Lysakowski (Joe’s Garage Cx P/B Bikereg) managed to lead the chasers to take the last spot on the podium.
In the Men’s Elite Race, what was typically an East Coast affair turned international as the ranks were joined by Jens Vandekinderen (Kalas H.Essers Nnof Cycling Team) who took fourth in the 2015 Belgian Cyclocross National Championships. The uphill start was brutal, and took a few racing casualties as several Mock Orange Cyclocross Team riders collided just as the pavement turned to grass.

Jeremy Durrin (Neon Velo) led the race at the first lap with a seven second gap over Vandekinderen, and maintained the fast pace over several laps. Anthony Clark (Squid Bikes), Robert Marion (American Classic Pro Cx Team), Cameron Dodge (unattached) and Dan Timmerman (Stan’s Notues Elite CX) all stayed in the front group on the first five laps.
With two to go, Marion and Timmerman fell back and tried to maintain pace as chasers, while Clark, Dodge and Vandekinderen held over a five second lead. Dodge and Vandekinderen took off on the last lap, and the two of them went back and forth, with Dodge able to press an advantage over the final barriers and onto the pavement, extending his lead over the young Belgian by six seconds. Clark finished third 13 seconds back.
