WASHINGTON, D.C. — Beautiful fall foliage provided a wonderful backdrop for Elite cyclocrossers to battle for UCI points for the first time ever within the borders or our nation’s capital. Hosted on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH), racers stomped though dirt, roots, and grass across a tract of land on which President Abraham Lincoln’s cottage also sits.

The AFRH property gave promoting clubs DCMTB and Crosshairs Cycling a nice variety of terrain to carve a course that included some short, punchy climbing, a flyover, and several difficult off-camber features that were made even more challenging by dry conditions that produced pockets of deep, dry, flour-like dirt.

Saturday: Maximenko Dominates, Dodge Capitalizes on Timmerman Mishap for Win

On day one, Elite Women’s race winner Cassie Maximenko (Van Dessel/ISM/PowerBar/Challenge Tires) turned out a dominating performance winning solo over second place finisher Jena Greaser (unattached) and third place finisher Meghan Korol (Team Handmade).

Cam Dodge (unattached) took the win on the Men’s side out of the decisive selection of four riders that occurred midway through that included Ben Berden (Wcup Stoemper/TRP), Ben Frederick (beyondCX), and Dan Timmerman (Stan’s NoTubes Elite CX). While leading the group on the last lap, Timmerman would go down after suffering a pedal strike in a corner, leaving the other three to decide the podium. Dodge quickly got around Timmerman’s mishap first and was able to create a gap that he held to the line, with Berden coming around Frederick in the final meters to take second.

Many of the same faces were in the wind at the front end of affairs in the Elite races on day two. On the women’s side, Cassie Maximenko stretched the field out early, prying open a lead that she would not relinquish, winning nine seconds ahead of second place finisher Jena Greaser, with Kathryn Cumming (Cyclocross Magazine Racing) following 17 seconds later, rounding out the top three.

In the Men’s race on Sunday, another selection of four occurred after several laps that included Dodge, Timmerman, Justin Lindine (Apex/NBX/Trek), and Berden. Similar to the previous day, the lead group lost Timmerman in the closing stages, leaving the remaining three riders to sort out the podium. Dodge would take the offensive in the final third of the bell lap and held it all the way to the line. Berden and Lindine followed several seconds behind within sight of Dodge on the final straight for second and third, respectively.

This weekend’s events were the third and fourth races of the Bikereg Super 8 series, which continues next week at Ed Sander Memorial Cyclocross in Adamstown, Maryland. Registration closes on Wednesday, October 28th.
