World Cup cyclocross racing returns to the iconic sand dunes of Koksijde this weekend. It’s a big weekend in cyclocross, with the Superprestige Merksplas on Saturday and the UCI Cyclocross World Cup Koksijde on Sunday.

It’s a welcomed return for the sandy spectacle. The 2020 Cyclocross UCI World Cup Koksijde was canceled due to Covid-19. The previous time it was canceled was in 2016 when there were strong winds.

The first UCI World Cup Koksijde was held in 1996. However, women did not start racing until 2003. The first women’s winner of the UCI World Cup Koksijde was German star Hanka Kupfernagel.

Katie Compton won the 2008 UCI World Cup Koksijde and went on to win three more. The first time we reported on the UCI World Cup Koksijde Elite Women was in 2008 and the winner was Katie Compton.
