The name Ali Goulet may not ring a lot of bells when thinking about professional ‘cross racing, but Goulet has proven that he can ride with many of the best riders in the US. From a childhood spent in Italy to a Junior World Cup MTB win in Vail, CO, in 1991, Goulet has a long history as a bike racer. After a foray into professional snowboarding resulted in a torn ACL, Goulet rediscovered his love of bike racing. Goulet has found that he excels at ‘cross, tearing through Master’s fields at the USGP of Cyclocross. Goulet has been reaching podiums and getting attention as he rips through races on his Pinarello CX Cross.
The Pinarello CX Cross is a monocoque carbon bike from one of Italy’s marquee brands. The Cross CX Carbon is definitely a ‘cross racer with top-routed cabling and geometry geared for ‘cross racing. The added fork rake and extended chainstays show that thought went into molding the frame to a ‘cross racers preferences. The one strange feature is the pointy underside of the top tube, suggesting Pinarello doesn’t think there’s much running in cyclocross nowadays.
The most common name on the components of Goulet’s Pinarello is Easton. The company known for excellent carbon and alloy parts provides bars, stem and seatpost for the Pinarello. EC90 carbon cranks ensure that Goulet’s power is transferred efficiently to the drivetrain, and EC90 Aero carbon wheels keep Goulet moving when the mud gets a little deep.
Stopping the EC90 Aero carbon wheels are 4zA cantilever brakes. 4zA brakes are of a proven design, which is not surprising since 4zA is the house component brand of Ridley Bikes, a ‘cross stalwart and Pinarello competitor. The 4zA’s are a wide profile brake that allows for excellent mud clearance.
The component package is rounded out with parts from SRAM and Look. Force shifters and rear derailleur handle all the shifting duties as Goulet runs a single ring setup in the front. Look, after a hiatus from the off-road market, has reemerged with the Quartz Pedals. After some problems with the first generation, the pedals have proved themselves worthy of the ‘cross community.
