American Katie Compton overcame a slow start at the sand dunes of Koksijde, Belgium to catch race and World Cup leader Hanka Kupfernagel and beat her in the sprint to take the victory. Compton doubted that she was the strongest on the day, but thought she raced the smartest.
There were no less than four Americans at the race, with Laura Van Gilder making her first ‘cross trip across the pond, and finished an impressive 16th. Deidre Winfield and Christine Vardaros were also battling in the sand, with Winfield finishing 21st and Vardaros having some tough luck and finishing in 33rd.
