Southeast Nebraska put its best face forward on Saturday during the 2018 Gravel Worlds gravel race.
With the race starting before dawn at 6 a.m., the 260 rides taking on the 150-mile race headed to the gravel roads north of Lincoln with their bike lights showing the way.
When the sun finally peeked over the horizon, an early-morning fog created a beautiful scene that, in a way, belied the tough seven-plus hours of racing even the top athletes had left to go.

The beautiful scene worked out well for photographer Robert Clark of Bloomington, Illinois. He admitted he will go pretty much anywhere for a good photo, and with grassroots gravel races such as Gravel Worlds taking off in the U.S., the seven-hour drive from Central Illinois was well worth it.
Clark followed the race—won by Alison Tetrick for the women and Colin Strickland for the men—from its 6 a.m. start until the affair was decided in the mid-afternoon.
