Hoogerheide, Netherlands – On a dark and drizzly day in this small Dutch town, just north of the Belgian border, Dutch Junior David van der Poel wrapped up his World Cup season on a high note. Van der Poel took a sprint victory over countryman Danny van Poppel and, with the victory, claimed the overall World Cup title as well. Van der Poel’s World Cup title came at the expense of previous leader Gert-Jan Bosman, who fell to second place overall after a sixth place finish.

Van der Poel started slow, but made progress on early leaders van Poppel and French racer Julian Alaphilippe, finally reaching van Poppel on the final lap of the race, just in time to take the sprint. Ten seconds behind, Alaphilippe, who fell to ninth place during the fourth lap after riding well early in the race, battled back to claim third over Jens Vandekinderen, just edging out the Belgian rider on the line.

Vanderkinderen’s fouth place race finish was enough to bump him up from fifth in the overall points standings, giving the final spot on the World Cup series podium to the Belgian rider.

Representing the USA, Cody Kaiser took 41st place, Jeff Bahnson 46th and Chris Wallace 48th. Yannick Eckmann, a German who calls Boulder, Colorado home and races for the Clif Bar Development Squad, finished in 19th.

In the Under-23′s, Belgian Tom Meeusen secured his World Cup title with a second place finish, ten seconds behind his Fidea teammate Kacper Szczepaniak of Poland.  Szczepaniak started deep in the field, but made steady progress towards the front, taking over the lead from Meeusen on the fifth of seven laps and riding away from Meeusen one lap later. Meeusen fought off both French racer Arnaud Jouffry and Belgian Kenneth van Compernolle, emerging from the three-man chase group on the final lap and out-kicking the two by a handful of seconds.

Jouffroy’s third place finish was enough to take the third spot in the overall standings, bumping Dutch racer Tijmen Eising, who finished sixth today, down to fourth.  Slovakian Robert Gavenda held on to second place overall, despite a 16th place finish today.

Americans Zach McDonald and Danny Summerhill came in for 29th and 30th, while Jerome Townsend was 36th and Luke Keough was 41st.
