Nys Wins Vorselaar, Captures Ninth Superprestige Title

Sven Nys took an amazing ninth Superprestige title today with his win in Vorselaar. The Belgian national  champion only needed to finish seventh on the race, but “the canninbal” raced to win. He took the win with a five second lead on world champ Niels Albert, with Erwin Vervecken in third.

Bart Wellens had a very fast start, quickly opening a ten second lead ahead of a chasing group of eleven in front of his home crowd. Albert later took charge, and only Sven Nys, Kevin Paulwels, Klaas Vantornout, and Vervecken could follow.

Soon it was down to the best two after another Albert attack, as Nys was the only one able to follow, but  despite Albert’s continued late race attacks, Nys was the strongest, and left Albert on the last lap.

The course was slippery and muddy, much to Nys’ liking. The winner said, “This was a cross as I like to have, with lots of running and some curves that were very slippery.”

When asked about his series win, Nys said, “I have now won nine Superprestiges. It does not feel like the first time, but it’s always special… ”

Did you guys catch the comments from Nys where he pitched the idea for combining CX and XC (mountainbike) World Cups? His reasoning: XC needs more money and live tv time. CX needs a fresh influx of riders. No definite plans, of course, just an idea from him personally.
