STAD EEKLO, BELGIUM – For a race with only 28 men finishing, the field ran deep, with Sven Nys, Tom Meeusen, both Sven and Dieter Vanthourenhout, Klaas Vantornout and World Champion Niels Albert. Noticeably absent was Kevin Pauwels, who elected to race in The Netherlands at Heerlen.

From the start, a lead group of eight riders emerged with Nys and Albert on the front. Eventually, Albert would drop back, and Nys, Vantornout and Sven Vanthourenhout would parry for the top spots. In the final lap, Nys would be joined at the from by Meeusen and the German rider Marcel Meisen. The three would sprint for the finish, with Nys taking the win, followed by Meeusen and Meisen, respectively.
