VERONA, WISCONSIN — Maxx Chance (Boulder Junior Cycling) took the holeshot in the 15-16 Junior Men’s race, but the real showdown began after the herd of 59 cyclists – the biggest field of the day – had already gotten half a lap onto the course. At that point, a crash near the front slowed up almost the entire field, only allowing six riders to slip through unscathed. Among them was Team CF’s Austin Vincent, who quickly took advantage of the situation and created a gap on the rest of the field.
However, Team CF had yet another contender in the race, New England’s Pete Goguen, and though he got caught behind the crash, he managed to come back from what he estimates was 20th position. Once he made it back to the top ten, with a lap and a half remaining, he simply began picking off the racers ahead of him, working his way into second place by the time he and Vincent hit one to go.
Vincent and Goguen took the first and second podium spots, and were followed in by Ian Haupt (My Wife Inc), Ethan Reynolds (BYRDS) and Maxx Chance filling out the podium as the last Junior race of the day came to a close.
Post-race, when asked how excited he was about his win, Vincent simply replied, “I’m at a 10 right now.”
