LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY – In the Masters Women 35-39 race, Kristal Boni started strong quickly grew a solid gap on the field, racing consistently and powerfully to ride mostly uncontested from start to finish. Keeping Boni motivated to keep the pace high was Boni’s local competitor Melissa Barker, who chased hard in second and, at times, brought Boni into her sights. Boni was simply too strong on the course, however, and despite Barker’s efforts was strong enough to ride comfortably across the line.
“It was fun, hard,” said Barker. “Between frozen ruts and mushy mud, it was getting a little heavy on the bike, so I pitted on the last lap. Kristal is incredibly fast. We race together twice a weekend. I felt like I was closing a little, but I started to fade. I’m really pleased with my ride.”
“It feels incredible,” said Boni. “I wanted to get a good start. Getting a good line was crucial. Melissa was right behind me – we race together at home, so I knew she could get me!”
