Before the start of the men’s race, Canadian Geoff Kabush confided the wind would be the major factor despite wetter than usual conditions. “I’m going to try and tuck in behind Trebon,” he said. No one, however, was able to hold the big man’s wheel closely enough to cheat the wind as Trebon went on to win convincingly.
The men kept things tighter than the ladies after the start with pacelines forming on the first few laps. In the lead was Todd Wells with Garmin’s Danny Summerhill in second and Ryan Trebon confidently in third. About 15 minutes into the race, Trebon attacked gapping Wells and leaving Summerhill by himself in third.
As the race wore on, Trebon put on a clinic of riding smoothly and easily through the transitions with Wells forever 7 to 12 seconds behind. Summerhill began to fade and the duo of Jamey Driscoll and Belgian Ben Berden passed him by with two to go. At the finish, it was Trebon, Wells and Driscoll in first, second and third with Berden crossing the line soon afterward. Local favorite Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski also put in a good effort. Clearly gassed from his efforts at the finish, he admitted the race was a lot of fun, but that it was one of the bigger ’cross races he jumped into in 2011.
Tomorrow is day two of UCI racing in Boulder with the Boulder Cup at the recently completed Valmont Bike Park cyclocross course.
Stay tuned for full results.
