This week’s Throwback Thursday was inspired by Sven Nys’ epic battle with Wout van Aert at the Koksijde World Cup. The impressive display of two athletes at the top level of the sport going head-to-head for victory was one for the ages.

We dug not-too-far-back into the CXM archives to 2014, when Nys and Zdenek Stybar escaped off the front of the Cyclocross World Championships in Hoogerheide, Netherlands. The racing action is riveting—attack after attack the racers trade blows, trying to go clear for the solo win. There are multiple quick recoveries from mistakes and near misses on the muddy track.

Watch the highlight video and be sure to read our 2014 Cyclocross World Championships race report to relive all the action.

For those hoping for a Nys/Stybar rematch, your prayers have been answered. It has been recently announced that Stybar has committed to the Christmas week races in Belgium—he’ll be appearing at Antwerp, Loenhout, Baal (Nys’ home town) and Leuven. Let’s hope for one of these tight, dramatic battles again.
