The Women’s Elite Race started with Arley Kemmerer (PB2 Powered) taking the holeshot and powering through the first part of the course with Helen Wyman (KONA) close behind. This small lead worked to the leaders’ advantage as chaos ensued close behind. Right off the pavement several riders tangled together, resulting in Stacey Barbossa (MidAtlantic Colavita) to crash, eventually taking her out of the race.

Wyman took over the lead, once again using the four consecutive sandpits to their advantage. Unlike yesterday with a small crash, she rode a fully smooth race, building a stronger lead lap after lap. Kemmerer also found her groove in the race, and solidly took second. Jessica Cutler (Jamis Bikesport p/b Bike Law) found herself riding out in the open with a hard chance to strike for second but without much threat from fourth.

Hyde Holds Off Late Surge by Dan Timmerman in Men’s Elite Race

The Men’s Elite Race saw constant lead changes for most of the race until the last two laps. Lukas Winterburg (MG-Cycling) immediately launched attack after attack following his holeshot, with Robert Marion (American Classic) trailing close behind with several others. Even after a few laps in, Winterburg was out of his saddle, putting in yet another hard effort, which broke the field apart.

A small lead group appeared, which would include Winterburg, yesterday’s winner, Cameron Dodge (PureEnergy/Scott), Dan Timmerman (House Industries/Simple Human/Richard Sachs) and Stephen Hyde (Jam Fund/NCC). A small chase group formed, consisting of Jonathan Page (Fuji/SPY) and Chris Jones (United Health Care) after they shed Marion.

Winterburg could only last for so long with such a hard effort, and looked spent as he crossed the line with five laps left to go. Both he and Dodge fell back, likely from the intense effort they put in from the day before.

Timmerman and Hyde took control of the race while Jones separated himself from Page in the chasing group. Although the sandpits seemed to dictate much of the race for others, it was one that Jones was able to minimize his losses while riding through them. Page looked like one of the strongest riders both days in the sand, but Jones kept the tactical upper-hand, staying ahead of Page while entering. Eventually, Jones was able to create a gap while passing by everyone except eventual winner Hyde.

Timmerman was not ready to relinquish his position so quickly. He dug deep with two laps to go, reclaiming second place from Jones and gaining ground on Hyde. Hyde looked relaxed when he hit the pavement for the last time, even took the time to zip up his jersey for his sponsor. Either he knew his capabilities well, or didn’t realize how close Timmerman had come from behind. Both men were in the final stretch together, and Hyde had just enough time to raise both hands in the air as he crossed the line. Timmerman followed close behind for second, while Jones came in for third.
