Our roving reporter, Dave Lawson, made his way to the Town and Country Resort in San Diego’s Mission Valley last weekend for the second annual San Diego Custom Bicycle Show. Thirty-five frame builders were on hand to show their wares along with a number of companies displaying everything from tweed cycling caps to custom carbon fiber saddles and just about everything in between.

Although there were a number of beautiful ‘cross rigs at the show and a handful of high tech goodies, the big news is that when the SDCBS returns in 2011, the organizers are planning a major emphasis on all things cyclocross. They’re hoping to attract all of the major cyclocross-oriented builders and may even promote a race in conjunction with the show. Keep tuned to this space – we’ll have the latest details for you as they emerge.

In addition to taking in the stunning bikes and frames, we also managed to uncover a couple of interesting factoids on upcoming products:

  • Speedplay unfortunately did not bring their long awaited SYZR pedals to the show – they were still attached to company founder, Richard Byrne’s, bike. Byrne said, however, that he’s finally happy with the design and they are beginning to work out production details. He declined, though, to speculate on a possible release date.
  • Soulcraft’s Sean Walling told Cyclocross Magazine that, despite the success of their Convert chain tensioner (which was our favorite among those reviewed back in issue #2), they’d come up with a new design that will be “great for ‘cross.” The design is still being tweaked, but he’s hoping to move into production soon.
  • There’s some major buzz about a component manufacturer coming out with a new cyclocross-specific group. Specifics will be available soon!

For everything else, we’ll let the photos do the talking…
