The UCI XCO World Cup returned last weekend with a stop in Vallnord. Located in the small country of Andorra set in the Pyrenees and tucked in between Spain and France, the hilly setting provides one of the annual stops on the World Cup circuit.

Racing started on Friday with the Short Track competition and then finished with Sunday’s XCO races. Although ’cross fans likely noticed the absence of Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon – Circus), there was a relatively new cyclocrosser who gladly stepped into a starring role over the weekend.

Short Track

Despite everything Jolanda Neff (Trek Factory Racing) has accomplished on the mountain bike, entering the weekend she had yet to win one of the Short Track competitions added to the World Cups at the beginning of last season. As you may have guessed, that changed on Friday.

Neff took the Short Track win for the first time, beating out countrywoman Alessandra Keller (Thomus RN Swiss Bike Team) and World Cup overall leader Kate Courtney (Scott – SRAM MTB Team).

One welcome name in the Top 10 was that of Pauline Ferrand-Prevot (Canyon Factory Downhill Team). Ferrand-Prevot shut down her season early last year and had surgery for iliac artery endofibrosis in December. After returning to training in April, she raced the Albstadt World Cup in May and now appears to be quickly regaining her world-champion form.

Catharine Pendrel (Clif Pro Team) finished 7th, Emily Batty (Trek Factory Racing) 8th, Chiara Teocchi (Bianchi Countervail) 11th, Eva Lechner (Creafin TUV Sud) 12th, Elisabeth Brandau (EBE Racing Team) 16th and Sofia Gomez Villafane (Stan’s Pivot Pro Team) 30th.

Brazil’s Henrique Avancini (Cannondale Factory Racing) took the Men’s Short Track win. Nino Schurter (Scott – SRAM MTB Racing) finished second and Maxime Marotte (Cannondale Factory Racing) took third.

Paris to Ancaster winner Peter Disera (Norco Factory Team) of Canada finished 18th and Keegan Swenson (Stan’s Pivot Pro Team) finished 31st.

Full short track results can be found here.

XCO

Neff came close to pulling off the double, but Dutch rider Anne Terpstra (Ghost Factory Racing) took the XCO win. Neff took silver, and Yana Belomina (CST Sandd Bafang MTB Team) finished third.

Courtney finished 8th, Brandau 10th, Ferrand-Prevot 12th, Pendrel 17th, Lechner 18th, Teocchi 21st, Jenn Jackson (AWI Racing) 32nd, Najda Heigl 34th and Gomez Villafane 45th.

A replay of the Elite Women’s XCO race is available from redbull.tv.

Schurter doubled up on the weekend for the Men with the XCO win. Mathias Flueckiger (Thomus RN Swiss MTB Team) took second and Avancini third.

Disera took 11th, Swenson 18th, Raphael Gagne 53rd and Marc Andre Fortier (Pivot Cycles – OTE) 78th.

A replay of the Elite Men’s XCO race is available from redbull.tv. Full XCO results are below.

The next XCO World Cup is this coming weekend in Les Gets France. You can watch both the Short Track and XCO races on redbull.tv.
