Fire barriers proved to be warm and popular spectating areas. © Matthew Lasala

If you were in Louisville for the 2013 World Championships, you have raced, spectated, or just heard rumors about the Raleigh Singlespeed Derby held Thursday night in a nearby park. “We’re not saying that there will be fire,” they said weeks before the race, “but we have a lot of insurance.”

And as you can see in this gallery by Matthew Lasala, they didn’t disappoint. A pyrotechnics expert who used to work at a local Six Flags lent a hand in course design, and fire-eaters thrilled crowds during the largely bourbon-fueled race.
