Cyclocross in April? With Raleigh’s cyclocross race at Sea Otter and some top-tier pros lining up, it almost felt like fall as temperatures dropped, beers were poured, and crowds went wild at Sea Otter tonight.
In the women’s race, last year’s winner Raleigh-Clement’s Caroline Mani started strong, but Spy Optics/Marin’s Nicole Duke and Cal-Giant’s Rachel Lloyd were hot on her tail in the first lap. By the second lap of the 35 minute race, Lloyd and Duke had taken over the lead. In the last half lap, Lloyd attacked and opened a gap that she held on to for the rest of the race, soloing in for the win with Duke in second and Mani in third. Lloyd was a staple in the North American ’cross scene for years before taking a hiatus as a new mom, but we’re thrilled to see her back. She told us that cyclocross is high priority for her this coming season—stay tuned for a full interview!
In the men’s race, while Jonathan Page wasn’t on the start line this year, it was a star-studded field nonetheless with Ben Berden, Jamey Driscoll, Ryan Trebon and Justin Lindine all starting. Raleigh-Clement’s Berden took an early lead and never looked back, while Lidine (Redline) struggled in the start and took a lap to work his way into second. Behind them, Berden’s teammate Driscoll chased. Places behind them jumped around but the three stayed steady for the 40 minute race, with Berden taking the eventual win. Lindine told us that the second place finish made up for his result in the cross country race earlier in the day, which wasn’t the result he was hoping for. And Driscoll spoke to us about his new focus—a return to cyclocross with a bit of mountain biking tossed in, so stay tuned for that interview!
