BEND, ORE. – Ashley James (Appalachian State University) won her second National title today (she won U23 women last year), powering to a one-minute victory over Marian University racer (and rising Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld star) Kaitlin Antonneau. Carla Swart took third ahead of Lees McRae College teammate Erica Zaveta. Fort Lewis College then took the next five spots, most likely assuring them of victory in the team division.

James was ebullient at the finish line, having put over a minute into rival Antonneau. “Kaitlin’s a really strong rider and I haven’t beaten her all year. I figured I had a snowball’s chance in hell so why not go for it? Carla got the holeshot, but I was able to get a little gap from there, and at that point you just have to go. Anything can happen, so I went for it.”

Antonneau, for her part, seemed to be riding conservatively. She’s got a cycling scholarship to Marian and has to do this race to fulfill those obligations, but the U23 race appears to be her goal for today. Katie Compton (Planet Bike-Stevens) coaches Antonneau, and the up-and-coming racer was whisked away from the finish circle to cool down and relax before her bigger battle later in the day.

Kimberly Flynn (University of Tennessee-Chattanooga) won her first National title today in the Division 2 race, although she said she wasn’t sure of the result until “I hit the final stretch of pavement. Conditions are epic today and you never want to take anything for granted. The fast sections are getting faster and muddy sections are getting worse.” Flynn was visibly elated, having dramatically accomplished her goal today of “riding hard and having fun.”
