Grand Prix Groenendaal – Aernouts Beats Dutch Riders On Their Own Ground, Eising Wins U23
Bart Aernouts (Rabobank) took his second win of the season today in the GP Richard Groenendaal. Aernouts won with a big margin over teammate Gerben de Knegt (Rabobank) and last year’s winner of the World Cup in Zolder, Thijs Al (AA Drink Cycling Team). Tijmen Eising (Sunweb – Revor) and Mitchell Huenders (AA Drink Cycling Team) filled out the top five overall and were the best two U23 riders in the race.
Eddy van IJzendoorn (AA Drink Cycling Team), 2009 winner of the GP Richard Groenendaal, took the hole shot followed by Bart Aernouts, Patrick van Leeuwen, Tijmen Eising and Gerben de Knegt.
On the second lap, Bart Aernouts broke clear from his compatriots and nobody was able to respond. In the chase, a group of three riders formed with Gerben de Knegt, Tijmen Eising and Eddy van IJzendoorn. De Knegt showed he was the strongest of the three and left the others behind.
Thijs Al, who crashed twice in the beginning, found good legs in the second part of the race and bridged up in the final laps to Eising and Van IJzendoorn. The latter couldn’t handle the pace and would finish in sixth.
Bart Aernouts didn’t made any mistakes in the final lap and took his second win of the season, both in the Netherlands, including the opening ‘cross in Harderwijk. Aernouts was very satisfied with his win, “I was afraid for my teammate Gerben de Knegt. Gerben is in form for the moment. When I was able to create a gap, I gave all I have. It turned out well and didn’t made any mistakes.”
Lars Boom, who made his season debut in Sint-Michielsgestel, had to start from the back and eventually finished in 22nd, over four minutes down on his Belgian teammate.
Tijmen Eising, who finished in fourth, was the best rider in the U23 race. Mitchell Huenders and Corné van Kessel finished in second and third, respectively.
