VERONA, WISCONSIN— In a field of 20 pint-sized cyclocrossers, Andrew Schmidt started the race by taking the holeshot and finished the race with a definitive win, proudly raising his arms in the air and causing his mother to tear up as she ran to hug her triumphant son. “He beat 72 men in Chicago in the Cat 4 race,” she told me proudly as I waited to interview Andy, since he was busy hugging friends and family, including his grandmother who was beaming proudly.
His main competitor, Scott Funston (Old Town Bicycle), was right behind him with one to go, but Schmidt’s ability to ride the hill gave him the edge he needed to power away from his opponent. The two were followed roughly thirty seconds back by Adam Croft (Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development).
A full interview is coming soon, but when I asked Andy what he planned to do next, he smiled and said, “Party, I guess.”
This is one young man with a stellar future in cyclocross.
