New Poll – What would you spend $1k on?

August 9th, 2009   Filed Under polls

Our old poll revealed many like the new changes that prioritize USAC categories over registration time for determining start order at Nationals.  With the change, we project USAC officials will be busy with upgrade petitions this season, and the Pro-1-2 fields will be bigger than ever.

We’ve finally got a new poll up, for the dreamers in all of us. What would you do if $1k landed on your lap, but you had to spend it on cyclocross gear? …continue reading: New Poll – What would you spend $1k on?

New Poll: Start Order for Nats

July 14th, 2009   Filed Under polls

Last weekend we broke the news of the new process to determine starting order for Nationals. Promoter Brad Ross isn’t relying just on registration order to determine starting positions (behind the previous year’s top contenders). We’re curious to hear what you think about the changes. Our poll is on the right of our site.

New Poll: Women’s Pay; Old Poll: Mud Clearance Is Key

Should the market decide? Let us know – see our poll on the right. Our old poll on the type of brakes you’re riding …continue reading: New Poll: Women’s Pay; Old Poll: Mud Clearance Is Key

Polls: ‘Cross Attracting New Bike Racers; What’s Slowing You Down?

May 29th, 2009   Filed Under cyclocross news, cyclocross tech, polls

Our last poll confirmed cyclocross has a unique ability to bring road and mountain bike racers together, with equal numbers of you coming from road and mountain. More surprising is that one in five of you got your start in bike racing through ‘cross. Five years ago such a stat would have been unheard of.  BMX has played a bigger role …continue reading: Polls: ‘Cross Attracting New Bike Racers; What’s Slowing You Down?

New Poll Added: What Was Your First Form of Bike Racing?

May 25th, 2009   Filed Under polls

Our bike weight poll (aka Weight Weenie test) is over, and the results were interesting. Now we’re out to find out how you all got your start in bike racing. Was it via fat tires? Or skinny tires on the road or track? Or are you part of a growing group that found the unique aspects of ‘cross alluring enough to try your first race? Or perhaps you’re like Sven Nys or Logan Owen and got your start on small wheels on the BMX track?

Let us know. Take the poll on the right sidebar of our site and let us know.

Cyclocross Bike Weights: Coming Down, or Easy to Underestimate?

May 24th, 2009   Filed Under cyclocross news, polls

Our last poll asked what your cyclocross bike weighs. The results were a little surprising, even considering our die-hard audience of dedicated ‘crossers.

Of those of you who reported weights, nearly half of you estimate your bike to be 18 pounds or less, with 16% of you have bikes under 17 pounds, with pedals. One reader, “CXMan” even said, “I think you need to ratchet your poll two pounds lower to 16-17 and 15-16 lbs.”

Using some fuzzy math we estimated the average weight …continue reading: Cyclocross Bike Weights: Coming Down, or Easy to Underestimate?

New Poll: What Does Your Cyclocross Bike Weigh?

May 10th, 2009   Filed Under polls

Does a 20 pound race bike sound heavy or light to you?

We’ve got a new poll to gauge the weight-weenie tendencies of you all: We want to know how much your race-ready cyclocross bike weighs.  We at CXM have been fortunate to test a number of high-end race bikes. Even the lightest carbon models as spec’d with pedals are typically 18 pounds or heavier. With a light pair of race wheels, certainly 17 pounds is possible, but beyond that, it starts to get a bit more difficult and pricey.

Polls: Off-season Riding or Racing, and Your CX Shopping Plans

March 20th, 2009   Filed Under polls

We finally closed our old poll, and have a new, timely one up.

Our old poll had some interesting results. Cyclocross has long been just a way to maintain some fitness in the off-season when road and mountain bike racing is done. We all know that’s changed – as many of you are here on our site or hanging out in our cyclocross community site (who will be member #1,000?) because you live and breathe ‘cross. But now almost one in three …continue reading: Polls: Off-season Riding or Racing, and Your CX Shopping Plans

New Poll Added: January Nats?

January 4th, 2009   Filed Under polls

With most countries getting ready for their national championships this coming weekend, the 2008 U.S. championships are already a distant memory. But what if they were hosted at the same time as most of Europe? It’s not out of the question and still being discussed for future nationals after 2009’s event.

There are obviously a lot of pros and cons. With a longer calendar, you may have less overlap in UCI races, and a longer season in most regions. U.S. pros could race longer in the U.S. before going to Europe, but if they traveled over there for the race-heavy holiday season anyway, they’d have might need an extra flight to come back before worlds. And then there’s the weather…

Let us know what you think with our new poll on the right.

Readers Want More Barriers, Tell Us Why CX Rules

August 24th, 2008   Filed Under polls

Our last poll was decisive – the vast majority of you don’t think the UCI and USA Cycling rules are for the better of the sport, and over half of you would first reject the limitations on the # of barriers that are allowed on a course. Power to the promoters, and ultimately, the racer to decide what makes a good course and is most fun?

We’ve got a new poll up and it’s a simple one. Tell us what you like best about ‘cross. Go to it – express your opinion and vote in the upper right of our site.

New Poll – Express Your Feelings on CX Rules

August 17th, 2008   Filed Under polls

We finally added a new poll. Check it out on the top right of our site, and let us know how you feel about the modern cyclocross rules.

Our last poll was pretty interesting – seems like there was no clear favorite to our Issue 2 content – there was pretty even distribution among the votes, with the top being our mammoth project of interviewing all the cyclocross national champions, followed closely by Christine Vardaros’ column, her interview with Bart Wellens, and our Singlespeed Overdose article that featured coverage of SSCXWC, a how-to, and tensioner reviews. Our look at Hup United and the eBay sandbagger auction weren’t far behind either.

So that tells us either all our articles pretty much suck, or we’re doing a good job of having something for everyone. We hope it’s the latter!

New Poll and Old Polls

February 18th, 2008   Filed Under polls

We’ve got a new poll on our site – check it out on the right-hand side of our site.
Our past couple polls were pretty interesting. On racing on snow, over 50% of you said it “makes your heart tingle.” We’re assuming that’s a good thing, but perhaps for some that’s due to a bit of nerves? As I get up there in age, with a family history of heart issues, heart tingling is something I hope to avoid, although I do love racing on snow.

The previous poll was less surprising, as over 50% thought race entry fees should be $20 or less, with another 34% thinking they shouldn’t be more than $30. Who doesn’t want to save money? But yet we all want well-run, organized events. Are those two needs in conflict? Drop a comment. We’d love to hear promoters’ thoughts too.
