  • Interbike 2010 Power Players: Garmin, Quarq and Look/Polar

by Josh Liberles Why would a cyclocrosser want to invest in a power meter? The obvious benefit is to use one during training, whether for hitting prescribed wattage marks for intervals, or for tracking progress and fitness from week to week – and, potentially over years of cycling. But more and more ’crossers are bringing [...]

  • Interbike Product Spotlight: Castelli Cyclocross Skinsuits, Training Gear

As cyclocross continues to grow, it’s not surprising that many brands are re-purposing existing products and branding them for cyclocross to cash in. And ’cross has a history as a hodge-podge of a sport; it started with left over, hand-me-down road and mountain bike bits given second lives in the “off-season.” Well, times have changed [...]

  • Interbike 2010: More New Cyclocross Tires – Kenda, Vittoria, Clement

We often say that the only true cyclocross-specific component, besides a frame and fork, is the cyclocross tire. And thus it’s often the first thing we, as tire geeks, seek out at Interbike. Just a few days ago, we highlighted new cyclocross tires from Schwalbe, Hutchinson and Challenge. But with some dedicated digging we found [...]

  • Interbike 2010 Product Spotlight: Grammo ’Cross Bike, Serotta Forks, SwissStop Aluminum Brake Pads

Interbike is winding down tomorrow and, not surprisingly, we’ve seen an overwhelming quantity of bike stuff – cyclocross and otherwise (check back throughout the weekend and next week for all the news). We ran into New Zealand company Grammo’s first foray into cyclocross at the outdoor Dirt Demo on Tuesday and snapped some quick picks [...]

  • Interbike New Product Spotlight – 2011 Focus Mares Lineup

The Focus 2011 offerings range from the $1400 Mares AX 3.0, an aluminum-framed model equipped with the budget-minded Shimano Tiagra, to the Mares CX 1.0, an all-carbon model with SRAM Force which tops the line at $4,300. The bikes seem to be typical of past offerings from Focus — race-oriented, no-nonsense rides built to fly [...]

  • Interbike 2010 Product Spotlight: Chris King and Cielo

Chris King isn’t quick to make changes or follow fads – but, when the Portland, Oregon-based company makes a new product or innovation, you can count on its quality, durability and performance. Chris King No Thread headsets have set the industry standard for longevity and the quality of bearings, and the hubs built around those [...]

  • Interbike Product Spotlight: 2011 Redline Conquest Lineup

by Jamie Mack Redline typically has one of the deepest cyclocross bike selections of any manufacturer, and 2011 should be no exception. There seems to be a Conquest model for any size rider, budget or skill level. Redline guessed right a year ago that the UCI would re-allow disc brakes in cyclocross, and added  disc [...]

  • Interbike Eye Candy: Guru Custom ’Cross Bikes

by Josh Liberles The Montreal, Canada-based company Guru has made getting a custom bicycle relatively fast and easy. Go through a Guru dealer and take advantage of their new Dynamic Fit (DFU) system, or supply your numbers if you already know them. Pick your materials – right now, steel and titanium are available, but full [...]

  • Cross Vegas Pro Bike Profile: Molly Cameron’s Custom Carbon Independent Fabrication Cyclocross

ENVE (formerly Edge Composites) always has a great display of custom, one-off cyclocross bikes in its booth to showcase manufacturers and racers who use its carbon components. We spent some time with Molly Cameron’s carbon Independent Fabrications cyclocross rig, a carbon lugged frame complete with Di2, Shimano PRO cockpit, and of course, an ENVE fork. [...]

  • Interbike 2010: New Cyclocross Tires from Schwalbe, Challenge and Hutchinson

Two long-awaited cyclocross tubulars were unveiled today at Interbike by Schwalbe and Challenge, while Hutchinson showed off its revised tubeless cyclocross tires. The first was the long-delayed tubular version of the Racing Ralph clincher. The German company had several false starts with this tire, and since has even updated the tread pattern on its clincher [...]

  • Interbike Eye Candy: Mad Fiber Overhauls the Wheel

by Josh Liberles I had the chance to test out Mad Fiber’s tubular creations a few weeks ago at a shop demo in Portland, and got to follow up with the creators here at Interbike today. One look reveals that the company’s recently-released wheel offerings aren’t just another addition to the carbon hoop market. First [...]

  • Interbike Eye Candy: First Looks at Raleigh’s SSCXWC bike, Fuji’s Altamira CX, and TRP’s RRL Brake Lever

Interbike’s Outdoor Demo presents opportunities to get a first look – and a first touch – at new products for the 2011 season. And for us cyclocrossers, that 2011 season is now. We snapped hundreds of photos of new products at the Outdoor Demo, and are already backlogged with new cyclocross product highlights before the [...]

  • New Campagnolo Cranks, First Foray into Cyclocross Market

Campagnolo's CX11 Carbon Crankset. Photo courtesy Campagnolo

We’d heard rumors a while back about legendary Italian component manufacturer Campagnolo coming out with a gruppo specifically for cyclocross and have seen early photos but had been sworn to secrecy. Now, the first signs “of” that lineup are public in the form of the CX Power-Torque cranksets. Campagnolo purists or mix-and-match fans (see our revolutionary Perfect Cyclocross Shift article in Issue 9 and our popular online article on using Campy shifters with Shimano drivetrains) have another drivetrain component option that allows smaller chainrings. Presumably other components will accompany the crankset shortly, and we’ve already seen info about three cyclocross-specific aluminum clincher wheelsets coming to market soon.

  • Giro Steps into Footwear with 2011 Shoe Line

If you happened to focus on Levi Leipheimer’s feet during the Tour de France, you may have noticed a logo that seemed, at first, out of place. Leipheimer also raced Giro’s top off-road shoes, the Code, to victory in the recent Leadville 100 race. Giro, well-known for its line of brain buckets, has expanded into [...]
