Oostmalle, Belgium – On a sandy and windswept—though very fast—course, in front of a huge and enthusiastic crowd, the real racing of the 2009-10 cyclocross season concluded with the final round of the Gazet Van Antwerpen Trofee. Fans were treated to two diametrically opposed endings: in the women’s race, Marianne Vos edged out Daphny Van Den Brand for the win by barely more than a wheel, while the men’s race was a show of force, with Bart Wellens taking a solo victory, nearly a minute ahead of second place finisher Zdeněk Štybar. …continue reading: Wellens, Vos Victorious at Season’s End in Oostmalle – UPDATED – Photos and Full Results

One week after Niels Albert had victory stolen from him by 2010 World Champ Zdenek Stybar in the final turns in Vorselaar—and just a day ahead of cyclocross’ final outdoor race of the season—the 2009 World Champion once again found himself on the losing end of a last minute battle, this time being outkicked by Sven Nys in the final meters of the Kleicross in Lebbeke. Nys, who will defend his lead in the only remaining major series, the GVA Trofee, in Oostmalle tomorrow, showed he’s playing to win this week when he bridged up to early leader Bart Wellens, then went solo halfway through the race. …continue reading: Nys Takes 15th Win in Lebbeke

Vorselaar, Belgium – One of the coldest cyclocross seasons on record began to wrap up with the final round of the Superprestige series, fittingly in the snow once again. In the Juniors race, Dutch rider Davd Van Der Poel took a third place finish to lock up the overall Superprestige title, while in the U23’s Tom Meeusen simply outhandled the entire field on a slick, technical course to take his fifth win of the eight-race series and the overall title as well. …continue reading: Meeusen, Van Der Poel Win U23, Junior Superprestige Overall – UPDATED: Full Results

In a strange scheduling twist, this year’s British Cyclocross Championships came after Worlds. The unusually cold weather and snow that has hit much of Europe this winter, and was responsible for the original British championship’s postponement, was gone as just about all of the competitors opted to race bare-legged.
Helen Wyman (Kona-FSA Factory Team), who seemed to struggle in Tabor’s snow during the World Championship, found redemption and repeated as Women’s National Champion. The victory marks her fifth national title, matching Caroline Alexander’s record. Just the day before, Wyman rode an impressive race in Belgium to take fifth place in Krawatencross, just off the pace of the lead foursome. …continue reading: Wyman, Bibby Bring Home British Cyclocross Championships – Report, Full Results

Maldagem, Belgium – Just three days after claiming his World Champion stripes, Zdenek Stybar was back on the race course flaunting his new kit. Post-Worlds celebrations may have gotten the better of Stybar, however, who only managed to muster a seventh place.

Tábor, Czech Republic – With thousands of fans and several years to anticipate racing the Cyclocross World Championships in his home country, Zdeněk Štybar had plenty of time to feel the pressure of chasing his first Elite world title in Tabor. “We tried not to talk about the race because there was a lot of pressure from outside. We tried not to think about Worlds,” Stybar’s girlfriend revealed. But on an slushy, slippery course, with his whole country’s expectations on his shoulders, the 2009-10 World Cup winner quickly showed that he’d be the rider to beat with a fast start and masterful lines that left the rest of the field slipping, literally, while he raced towards the rainbow stripes. …continue reading: What Pressure? Tabor, Czech Republic – Joyce Vanderbeken, former Belgian champion, perhaps summed up the day in Tabor for a lot of riders, “I was afraid. I lost a lot of places because of it.” But Marianne Vos was clearly able to put fear aside as she won her third Cyclocross World Championship, her sixth title in all cycling disciplines, in Tabor with a dominating performance that left the rest of the world’s best in her wake. Tábor, Czech Republic – The Szczepaniak brothers, Pawel and Kacper, rode away with gold and silver in the Under-23 World Championship as their Polish U23 team stamped its mark on a dramatic race for the rainbow jersey, taking three of the top five slots. The two emerged at the front of the race during the second of seven laps, part of an early break that also included compatriot Marek Konwa. The Polish block at the front managed to control the dynamics of the race and, more importantly, were able to bottle up Belgian powerhouse Tom Meeusen, who dominated the international U23 ranks this season. While the three-man Polish break held together for most of the race, French racer Arnaud Jouffoy was able to connect with the front of the race, winding up third, but nearly stealing second from the younger of the two Szczepaniak brothers.

Tábor, Czech Republic - On an icy, frozen course, but under brilliant sunshine and relatively warm conditions, Czech junior Tomas Paprstka held off a late attack by France’s Julian Alaphilippe to take the first title of the 2010 World Championships. Paprstka’s ride, buoyed by a jubilant home crowd that lined the twisting, compact course, saw him surge from relatively deep in a group of about ten riders up to first, following a blazing attack during the third lap.
French racer Emilien Viennet took the holeshot, but fell just before the stairs and surrendered the lead to Belgian Gianni Vermeersch and Dutch racer Gert-Jan Bosmon, who took turns pushing the pace, feeling each other out through the first few laps. But Paprstka surged and opened a gap of maybe 20 meters over the rest of the race, leading from there until …continue reading: Praptska Opens Up Worlds with Czech Win – Updated: Photos, Brief Report, Full Results
