CLEVELAND, Ohio—It’s finally a good time to be a Cleveland sports fan. While some in Cleveland were partying due to the return of the Indians to the World Series or still celebrating the Caveliers’ first NBA title, others in the city were on a sports high as some of the nation’s top cyclocross racers were in town to compete for coveted UCI points at the North Coast Gran Prix of Cyclocross, the city’s first UCI event.

In the women’s race, racers came from near and far to battle for the UCI C2 points. California-based Amanda Nauman of SDG-Muscle Monster led from start to finish to claim her first victory in this year’s USA Cycling Professional Cyclocross season at the North Coast Gran Prix of Cyclocross today. After two top-10 results at the Rochester Cyclocross in September, Nauman raised her hands in victory in Cleveland, Ohio.

Muddy and cool conditions greeted the racers after two days of rain in Kirtland Park. Nauman pulled away on the first lap, setting the fastest lap of the day and growing her lead from 18 seconds to one-minute by the time she crossed the finish after seven laps of racing. She crossed the finish line with a time of 49 minutes and one second. Jenna Blandford (USA) of Women’s Project Pedal p/b VO2 won the duel for second place, finishing just one second ahead of Megan Barr (USA) of Angry Catfish.

In the men’s race, American Drew Dillman of Cyclocross Alliance powered away on the third lap to win the North Coast Gran Prix of Cyclocross in one hour, four minutes and 12 seconds today. Dillman, who had an eighth-place finish in Rochester Cyclocross earlier this season, claimed his first victory in this year’s USA Cycling Professional Cyclocross season. Crossing the line 39 seconds later, runner-up Jonathan Page (USA) of Page/ Fuji took his fourth top-five finish. Spencer Petrov (Cyclocross Alliance) was third, four seconds behind Page.

The front of the race re-shuffled often in the first two laps in the the muddy conditions at Kirtland Park in Cleveland, Ohio. But one lap later, Dillman had established a lead of 12 seconds on a chase group which included Page, Petrov and Tristan Cowie (USA). The three chasers battled it out for the remaining two podium spots while Dillman solo’ed to the win.

Former Cyclocross National Champion Bjorn Selander continued his climb up the results in his return to cyclocross, fnishing fifth behind Tristan Cowie.

Racing continues on Sunday, for Day Two of the North Coast Gran Prix of Cyclocross in Cleveland, Ohio.
